Female genital mutilation on the rise in Maldives

A doctor who wishes to remain anonymous confirms to Dhivehistan Report that girls are being brought to the hospital because they are getting infected from genital mutilation.
While this practice is primarily cultural, some religions do include FGM as part of their practices.
According to Egyptian Al-Azhar University scholar Sheikh Muhammad Al-Mussayar "First of all, there are reliable hadiths in Al-Bukhari and Al-Muslim which support female circumcision. The Prophet Muhammad said: 'If a circumcised woman and man have intercourse, they must undergo ablution.' Unreliable hadiths do not cancel out the reliable ones. We have unreliable hadiths regarding prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage. Should we abolish prayer and charity just because some hadiths are unreliable? According to some hadiths in Al-Bukhari and Al-Muslim, 'If a circumcised woman and man have intercourse, they must undergo ablution.' People would curse one another by saying: 'You son of a clit woman' - the son of a non-circumcised woman. The objections to circumcision are illogical and unnatural."

  1. Prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage are all supported by Quran!

Whether supported by Koran or not, Maldivian Muslims are practising female genital mutilation as an Islamic religious duty.

  3. don't take me wrong, nothing is more terrible than ignorance in action...

but on the other hand... we are all stupid... ain't we?

oops! are we talking of collective wisdom of individual ignorance?

    It is cruel and barbaric.
Not everybody is stupid. People like you who condone and support female genital mutilation are stupid and ignorant.

  6. The practice of FGC predates both Islam and Christianity and there is no clear understanding of where or why the practice of FGC came into existence. Greek papyrus from 163 B.C. mentions girls in Egypt undergoing circumcision and it is widely accepted to have originated in Egypt and the Nile valley at the time of the Pharaohs. Evidence from mummies have shown both Type I and Type III FGC present. It was most likely spread throughout the Northern parts of Africa with Arab slave traders and is now practiced among Muslims, Christians and Animists. However, religion alone is not the common thread amongst FGC advocates, as it transcends both culture and religion. UNICEF stated that when "looking at religion independently, it is not possible to establish a general association with FGM/C status.

Now why would Maldivians want to do that?

Maldivians are doing it because, (as Ismail Rasheed has pointed out)Muslim religious scholars like the Egyptian Al-Azhar University scholar Sheikh Muhammad Al-Mussayar are saying that it is a Sunnah. There is no other reason for Maldivians to engage in this barbaric practice.

    ReplyDelete
  8. If Sheikh Muhammad Al-Mussayar saying so, it becomes a Sunnah, then Maldivians must be worhsiping him I guess...

    What a sad story!

There are many forms of feale circumcision. In Maldives a few years back "showing blood" or pricking the clitoris with a needle was common practice in the islands. I guess then no one was objecting against it. Now the problem is that the whole genitalia is being removed. huh.

  10. I am just wondring why dont maldivians listen to Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, Ali Gomaa and Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradwi

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6176340.stm

While the Muslim Scholars from around the world have declared it as un-islamic why are Maldivians following it?

Yusuf, How the namaadhu is performed is not in the alCoran. It is in the Hadith, and of course, that was how Mohodhey's tribe worshipped their 360 gods in the Kaaba. So do you now not perform namaadhu because of that? Same goes to how the haj is performed. Mohodhey's claim that he was a prophet is also based on a Hadith and so ultimately the alCoran is authenticated by Hadith. The whole farce crumbles once you start discarding Hadith.

  15. Dhivehi Christian:
i will try to make this short...

    1. Mohmammed (pbuh) mission was to deliver the message of Islam:
    13:40
Whether We show you part of what We have promised them or cause you to die, your duty is ONLY to convey and on Us is the reckoning.

    2. Abraham named us Muslims
    22:78
And strive hard in Allah's Cause as you ought to strive. he has chosen you and has not laid upon you in religion any hardship: it is the religion of your father Ibrahim (Abraham). It is he Who has named you Muslings both before and in this (Quran), that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you be witnesses over mankind! So perform As-Salat give Zakat and hold fast to Allah. He is your Maula (Patron, Lord) and what an Excellent Helper!

    3. Islam is the same religion as that of Abraham and all other prophets...
    16:123
Then, We have sent the revelation to you "Follow the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanifa (Monotheism) and he was not of the Mushrikun."

    4. And hence we follow the same religious practices as Abraham (with various amendments shown in Quran like in fasting)
2:127-128 And when Ibrahim and Ismail were raising the foundations of the House (Kabah at Makkah) (saying) "Our Lord! Accept from us. Verily You are the All Hearer, the All Knower."
"Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive to You, and show us our Manasik (all the religious duties, the ceremonies of pilgrimage), and accept our repentance. Truly You are the One Who accept repentance, the Most Merciful"

Muhammed was inspired to follow the religion of Abraham
    16:123
Then, We have sent the revelation to you "Follow the religion of Ibrahim Hanifa (Monotheism) and he was not of the Mushrikun."

At the time before and during the time of Muhammed there were many followers of the religion of Abraham....

Those religious practices were followed from generation to generations. The Hadith are just written preservations of the same old practices.

Maryam (Mary) used to perform salat.
    3:43
O Mary! "Submit yourself with obedience to your Lord and prostate yourself, and bow down along with Ar-Rakiun (those who bow down)"

    Jesus used to perform Salat
19:31 (Jesus Said) "and He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salat (prayer) and Zakat as long as I live"

But the Jews and Chiristians lost their Salat prayers, invented and/or changed it...
    19:59
Then, there has succeeded them posterity who have given up As-Salat [made their salat to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times] and have followed lust. So they will be thrown to Hell.

    5. The times of the prayers are also give in quran
    (1) The Dawn Prayer (Fajr) in 11:114, 24:58
    (2) The Noon Prayer (Zuher) in 17:78 and 30:18
    (3) The Afternoon Prayer (Asr) in 2:238
    (4) The sunset Prayer (Maghrib) in 11:114
    (5) The Night Prayer (Isha) in 24:58

    6. The steps are indicated in the Quran
Bowing Down (Ruku) and Falling Prostrate (Sajud) 22:77

I can go on... but this is enough for me, so I leave you in peace...

    take care...

  16. typo: Muslings => Muslims

  17. Forgot to add this...

Jesus (PBUH) used to pray according to Bible

“And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray…” Matthew 14:23

The New Testament of the Gospel clearly says that Jesus (PBUH) was a submissive slave.

“It is written again, thou shalt not tempt the Lord, thy God.” Matthew 4:6-7

In the same chapter when the Devil wanted Jesus (PBUH) to obey with his directions, Jesus (PBUH) replied by saying that it was written in the previous Books…

“Thou shalt worship the Lord, thy God; And Him only shalt thou server.” Matthew 4:10

“But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your master, even Jesus, and all ye are brethren.” Matthew 23:8

“And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 23:9

So the Biblical term Father is used in a general sense meaning the relationship of Lord and His servants and is not exclusively reserved for Jesus (PBUH).

    I leave you in peace...

And when Our clear Verses are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe "Which of the two groups is best in position and as regards station (place of council for consultation)"
    74
And how many a generation (past nations) have We destroyed before them, who were better in wealth, goods and outward appearance?
    75
Say whoever is in error, the Most Gracious will extend (the rope) to him, until, when they see that which they were promised, either the torment or the Hour, they will come to know who is worst in position, and who is weaker in forces.
    -------
    17:13
And We have fastend every man's deeds to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall bring out for him a book which he will find wide open
    14
(It will be said) "Read your book, You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day"
    15
Whoever goes right, then he goes right only for the benefit of his ownself. And whoever goes astray, then he goes astray to his own loss. No one laden with burdens can bear another's burden. And We never punish until We have send a Messenger.
    15
And when We decide to DESTROY a town (population), We (first) send a definit order (to obey Allah and he righteous) to those among them who lead a life of luxury. Then, they transgress therein, and thus the word (of torment) is justified against it (them). Then We destroy it with complete destruction.,

  25. anonymous,
I think female genital mutilation (or female circumcision as they like to call it) is a serious issue that needs to be discussed. If some readers want to turn it into a christian versus muslim issue they are not adressing what i wrote about in the posting.
Suja, you must be new to the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  26. anonymous: it is not, adultere shall marry non but adulteress! it stays in
    24:3
The adulterer marries not but an adulteress or a Mushrikah and the adulteress none marries her except an adultere or a Muskrik. Such thing is forbidden to the believers.

In other words replace the word 'shall' with 'will'

it other words if you do marry an adulteress you are not among the believers... what kind of a bird brain do you have?

ismail: FGC is not a religious act! if you are so concerned about the issue why talk about it but do something about it... your always welcome... but i have question about your motives! so count me out...

yusuf: I agree with you. But if you apply the (blog) author's logic, it means adultery is OK in islam. Now dont tell me it is not OK, I know that. But this blog's author's logic goes the other way around in his methods to prove Islam advocates circumsizing girls.

NO VERSE IN THE QURAN and NO HADITH orders or even bloody SUGGESTS to circumsize women. It MAY say something about those who already did it, but no way they are asking people to do it.

    24:03 from Quran

The adulterer marries not but an adulteress or a Mushrikah and the adulteress none marries her except an adulterer or a Muskrik [and that means that the man who agrees to marry (have a sexual relation with) a Mushrikah (female polytheist, pagan or idolatress) or a prostitute, then surely he is either an adulterer, or a Mushrik (polytheist, pagan or idolater, etc.) And the woman who agrees to marry (have a sexual relation with) a Mushrik (polytheist, pagan or idolater) or an adulterer, then she is either a prostitute or a Mushrikah (female polytheist, pagan, or idolatress, etc.)]. Such a thing is forbidden to the believers (of Islâmic Monotheism). (An-Nur 24:03)

See the last part of the verse:

"Such a thing is forbidden to the believers"
