Aya Ali al-Mulla crowned Miss Moral Beauty - With her face and body completely covered by the black head-to-toe abaya

Saudi beauty queen Aya Ali al-Mulla trounced 274 rivals to win a crown, jewellery, cash and a trip to Malaysia, and all without showing her face, Saudi media reported on Friday.

With her face and body completely covered by the black head-to-toe abaya mandatory in the conservative Muslim kingdom, 18-year-old Mullah was named "Queen of Beautiful Morals" late on Thursday, newspapers said.

There was none of the swimsuit and evening gown competitions and heavy media coverage of beauty pageants elsewhere when the contest was decided in the eastern city of Safwa.

Instead, the winner and the two runner-up princesses had to undergo a three-month test of their dutifulness to their parents and family, and their service to society.

This included a battery of personal, cultural, social and psychological tests, Al-Watan reported.

It was unclear exactly what Mullah did to pip her rivals in the huge field, but Al-Watan reported that the high school graduate had good grades and hopes to go into medicine.

She raked in a 5,000-riyal (1,333-dollar) prize, a pearl necklace, diamond watch, diamond necklace, and a free ticket to Malaysia with her win.

The 20-year-old first runner-up, one of triplets, had already won an education ministry-sponsored "I love you, my country" competition.

The second runner-up, a high school student aged 15, was cited for taking care of her home and family during the week because her mother works far from home and can only return on weekends.

Beauty contests focused on physical beauty are non-existent in segregated Saudi Arabia, where women can not mix with unrelated men, and must appear in public completely covered -- even in photographs.

Miss Moral Beauty pageant organiser Khadra al-Mubarak kept the focus on inner beauty, as defined by Islamic standards of Saudi Arabia.

"The real winner in this competition is the society. The winners represent the culture of the society and its high Islamic morals," Mubarak said, according to Al-Watan.

    Malaysia? Crown and cash prize?
One would think a prize for such high morals would be a two-way Umrah/Hajj trip and the chance to be the Grand Mufti's concubine.

In Saudi Arabia the annual camel beauty pageant causes more excitement (among the "men", anyway) than any contest involving mere women. Of course, in islam, camels are much more valuable. Sexier, too.

You people know nothing about Islam and its laws and life. Go learn and educate yourselves before writing such nonsense. These anti Islam comments come from barbarians and uneducated people who know nothing about Islam.

  8. anonymous,
We know enough about "Islam and its laws and life"
We study the Quran & Hadith and we study history and the behavior of those who worship Allah and Mohammed.
    We use our brains.
We do not keep repeating the Quran & Hadith like parrots.
We examine it, we compare it, we comment on it..
It is you who do not know the truth about "Islam and its laws and life" - if you did you will leave the death cult of Mohammed Ibn Abdullah

Allah is the devil and the Quran is a book of lies. Seek Jesus.. you know, the guy you honor as a prophet. He's the son of the Living God, not some prophet to be honored. You can either accept him as God, or as a complete lunatic and liar - there's no middle ground there.

frankly, if they really hated their lives enough to do something about it, their ladies could stage protests, overthrow their government, or start a new movement of some kind. we don't see so much of that - perhaps there are activists, but none significant enough to receive constant attention from the news, unlike say, Aung San Suu Kyi.

And even if there were any activists, a social revolution usually takes at least a few decades to produce significant results.

You know, I live in a country where Muslims are one of the larger religious groups. Here, Muslims in general are very nice people. My Muslim friend baked a whole batch of cookies to bring to school after their Hari Raya celebrations to feed her friends 8D well, just one example.

personally, i wouldn't want to dress like those ladies in Saudi Arabia, but I feel they chose to live like this, no? o_O even if they hate it, they sure didn't hate it enough to want to get rid of their culture altogether. I can't go around telling other people how to dress...

religious Muslims aren't bad either. if you can pray to your Jesus/Buddha/Shiva etc, why can't they pray to their Allah? I am not Muslim, but I've seen my Muslim friends pray before. It helps them, and it keeps the nice in them, so why not? There is no need to destroy somebody else's faith in their religion just because you believe in something else. ^_^

Those male chauvinists, judging women by their moral standards rather than having a bikini contest. I'm appalled! ... Cynism aside, religious opression in form of burkhas and other gender segregation, is just as bad as strip clubs, prostitution and sexist portayal of women in the media in the US and Europe. Both sides only present a woman as a provocative body without an interest of her own and very little to no personality. Sure, boycott opression and violence against women wherever you see it, in whichever form. But we don't have to travel to Saudi Arabia to witness it for the first time.
